Career
J.K. Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. She started her studies at Central High School and later attended the University of Exeter, where she studied French and Classics. In 1982, she applied to Oxford University but was not accepted.
After completing her studies, Rowling worked at Amnesty International as a secretary and also at the Chamber of Commerce. While traveling from Manchester to London, the idea for a story about a boy attending a school of magic first came to her mind.
She moved to Portugal to teach English, where she met journalist Jorge Arantes. They married on October 16, 1992. On July 27, 1993, she gave birth to her daughter Jessica. The marriage ended in divorce on November 17, 1993. After the divorce, Rowling moved to her sister's home in Edinburgh with her daughter and wrote the first three chapters of Harry Potter — it was the toughest time of her life.
She completed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on an old typewriter. 12 publishing houses rejected her manuscript before Bloomsbury in London agreed to publish it. The book was released on June 26, 1997, and became an instant success, winning the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the British Book Award within five months.
The sequels followed rapidly:
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets — July 2, 1998
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban — July 8, 1999
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — July 8, 2000 (372,755 copies sold on day one in the UK)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix — June 21, 2003
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince — July 16, 2005
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — July 21, 2007 (11 million copies sold on day one in the UK and USA)
In 2004, Rowling became the first person to become a billionaire from writing books. The final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, became the best-selling book of all time.
She has also written the Cormoran Strike crime series under the pen name Robert Galbraith and the companion book The Casual Vacancy.
